Common Brickwork Questions

Answers to the most common brickwork questions we get asked across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

I've noticed step cracking in my brickwork — is it serious? +

Step cracking usually follows the mortar joints in a staircase pattern and often indicates structural movement such as subsidence or settlement. Hairline cracks may just need repointing, but wider or active cracks should be assessed by a specialist. We'll inspect the cause and recommend whether stitching, underpinning, or a localised rebuild is the right solution.

How much does repointing brickwork cost? +

Repointing costs depend on the area to be covered, the condition of the existing mortar, and access requirements. Every job is unique, so we provide a no-obligation quote after a site visit so you know exactly what's involved — we never over-specify work.

What's the difference between cement mortar and lime mortar? +

Cement mortar is harder and used on most modern builds, while lime mortar is softer, breathable, and essential for older or period properties. Using the wrong mortar type can trap moisture and cause bricks to spall or crack. We always specify the correct mortar for your property's age and construction.

Can you match new bricks to my existing brickwork? +

Yes. Brick matching is one of the most important aspects of a quality repair. We source reclaimed bricks where possible and can also use specialist suppliers to find close matches for colour, texture, and size. Combined with careful mortar matching, repairs can be virtually invisible.

My garden wall is leaning — does it need to be rebuilt? +

A leaning garden wall is usually caused by inadequate foundations, tree root damage, or water saturation. If the lean is more than a few degrees, rebuilding with proper footings is generally the safest long-term fix. We'll assess whether stabilisation is viable or whether a rebuild is the better investment.

Do you build brick porches and extensions? +

Yes. We build brick porches, garage walls, garden rooms, and small extensions. We handle everything from foundations and DPC to the final course and pointing, ensuring the new brickwork matches your existing property seamlessly. All structural work is completed to building regulations.
